  1. This was one of the first books I purchased for my new Kindle. The novels I purchased seem just fine, and I am very happy with the Kindle for reading fiction, but the experience of trying to read this book and take the sample exam left me frustrated and angry. I hope it’s just this book, and not the Kindle.

The formatting of this book on the Kindle is horrible. Like most technical books, this book has a lot of bulleted text. but many of the bullets start in the middle of a line. When the bullets are at the beginning of a line, they rarely line up with one another. Headings and numberings are also mangled. This looks very amateurish, but the body of the book is still readable, and it contains information that may be helpful to some readers.

The problem with this Kindle book is that the most important part–the practice exam–is useless. The authors warn us that we will want to have a hard copy of the scenarios and questions when we sit for the official exam. The way ITIL Intermediate exam questions are structured, it is essential to be able to lay out the scenarios and questions side by side to search for the subtle differences between the options. You can’t do this on the online exam without a hard copy of the questions.

You can’t do this on a Kindle, either. But in this case, you can’t get a hard copy.

I tried to copy the questions into may clippings file so I could print them out–and that’s when I went from frustrated to angry. Midway through the third question I ran into a limit on the amount of text I was allowed to copy from this book into the clipping file. I was only able to print 2 questions before I ran into the wall.

I am definitely not recommending this book, but if you decide to purchase it, buy it in hard copy.

  2. The authors make it clear that you still need material from the Service Transition (ST) class to pass the test and they are correct. I’d like to see more text covering the roles and responsibilities as well as the relationships between them. Missing from the book, and definitely part of the test, is anything on organizational change, implementing Service Transition and how ST fits into lifecycle. Difficult, if not impossible, to pass the test the 1st time without knowing these subjects.

The most valuable part of the book is the 16 sample questions that mimic the gradient scoring for the real intermediate level ITIL V3 exams. However, there are some typos in the answers that could throw you if you don’t know the material. The explanations are correct, but the letters don’t match (e.g. Q5).

Bottom line: useful book, but don’t depend on it. You’ll need to review the OGC ST book and your course material before you even consider sitting the exam.
